Every morning I wake up, look 55km across the ocean to Whakaari and pay my respects. Whakaari is a treasured ancestor.
It is New Zealand’s most active volcano and 150,000 years old. The Māori name Te Puia o Whakaari means “The Dramatic Volcano” or “that which can be made visible” and is explained in two Māori legends.
One tells of Maui fishing the North Island from the ocean, accidentally stepping on some fire burning on the land. Where he shook this off his foot into the sea it became Whakaari. Another tells of Ngatoro-i-rangi bringing fire from Hawaiiki. Leaving his sisters at Whakaari, he voyaged onwards to Mount Tongariro. Finding it so cold there he called on his sisters to send fire. The volcanic/thermal activity between Whakaari and Tongariro marks the underground route taken by the fire spirits. Whakaari has been smoking a bit more than normal over the last month or so, so it has been apt I have been studying water and fire forms in qigong.
And boy did the water forms stir up some ancestral trauma, that went back to my soul’s origination eons ago, of anger, persecution, indignation and righteousness related to loss of land, connection to it, and therefore spirituality. Water/bear forms are related to our birth, development and maturation, kidneys as our body’s energy power or life force centres, bladder which balances our nervous system, deep seated fear and realisation which can be stored in our bones/marrow/brains, ears, head hair, adrenals, jing (pre-birth genetic energy from our ancestors which unites past, present and future to cosmic forces) and zhi (our will). They were a good reminder water is 80% of our bodies, the foundation of our functional integrity, is conscious and stores, receives, transmutes, transforms and transmits energy, and to feed our water love and light.
The fire forms were super transformative too and clear energy in a very short space of time. As a result I am busy releasing a karmic pattern of anger from 22 lifetimes of being abused or the abuser trapped in my arm (I could feel it in my bones), liver and auric/chi field. Dragon forms reset your metabolism to a younger age, help tone and purify, and attune spinal/kundalini energy, immortality and wisdom. They alchemise water and fire (producing cleansing steam), and suffering into grace and love. As such they are also associated with Guan Yin, goddess of water/lotus and embodiment of mercy, compassion and unconditional love, and she the ancient prayer Om Mani Padme Hum (Hail to the jewel within the lotus) which cultivates the six virtues (generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, renunciation and wisdom) that create a sacred heart.
Ancient wisdom is often undervalued in today’s society in the pursuit of empirical knowledge and growth, but there is so much to learn from our ancestors and I am very glad to now have more holistic practices such as qigong in my life, to be delving more deeply into the stories of my ancestors here in Aotearoa, and to reconnect with my own energy and the elements of water and fire. So if you need support with life transformation, clearing ancestral or past life trauma and mastering your energy, please do reach out as I have plenty of tools I can share with you 💖💫.
